Student Hire Programs

Recent Graduates

Candidates that have graduated within two years from an Accredited University/College or will graduate in the current year. Hired as full-time candidates at Band II Target III (GS-09 equivalent), given a salary increase at 6 months (based on performance). Remain in the recent graduate program for 18 months. They are then promoted to Band III (GS-12 equivalent).

Student Internships

High school and college students are exposed to multiple engineering technologies at the Ground Vehicle Systems Center for an 8- to 10-week period. Students are paid to put their skills to work while participating in leading-edge engineering experience. If you would like to learn more about our Student Hire Program, a call for applications announcement is posted every January at: www.usajobs.com. The title of the position is Engineering Aid/Engineering Technician. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, high school (age 18 or older) & college students interested in an Engineering/Science career.

Scholarship Program

Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART)

The SMART Defense Education Program is a scholarship-for-service program in which students who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude to excel in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines may be awarded a full scholarship and be gainfully employed upon degree completion. The application period to apply is open from August 1 through December 1 each year. SMART Scholars receive a stipend to cover room and board, and intern at national research laboratories during school breaks. Upon completion of their degrees, students are required to work for the DoD as civilian employees completing their service agreement with the SMART Program.
